Leadership Integrity Community

A Liftetime of Service. A Career of Leadership.

A lifelong Minnesotan with a career defined by duty, Jim Shegstad has spent over three decades protecting our communities and our country. Growing up in Andover and graduating from Blaine Senior High School, Jim’s commitment to service began early, leading him to a distinguished 26- year career in the U.S. Air Force and the Minnesota Air National Guard.

From serving in West Berlin and Saudi Arabia to his time as a Sheriff’s Deputy, Jim has operated on the front lines of public safety and national security. His leadership was uniquely proven in 2002 when he led the most productive military recruiting office in the nation, a success that resulted in his selection as the Minnesota Air National Guard’s Statewide Recruiting and Retention Superintendent.

Since retiring from military service in 2011, Jim has continued his commitment to public administration as a Human Resource Specialist for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Academic Excellence & Expertise

Jim believes that effective leadership requires both experience and a deep understanding of governance. His academic background includes:

  • Master of Administrative Science
  • Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Science
  • Associates Degrees in Criminal Justice and Human Resource Management.

Family and Community

Beyond his professional life, Jim is a devoted family man. He is the proud father of five adult children—Jamie, Haley, Nicholas, Alexander, and Adrian, and a doting grandfather to six. When he isn’t advocating for his fellow Minnesotans, he can be found fishing, reading, or enjoying the great outdoors with his family.

The Mission

Jim is ready to bring disciplined, common-sense leadership to Mayor’s Office to ensure a secure and prosperous future for the next generation.
